Leave the Pearl at mid-morning, explore the city that named the lake, return by water as the light turns golden
Depart Bellagio at 11:35 from the Lido di Bellagio — with the gardens of Villa Melzi immediately visible to the south as the boat begins the crossing into the full expanse of the western branch of Lake Como. As the boat moves south, the Tremezzina comes into view on the right bank: the stretch of western shore where Villa Carlotta and the headland of Villa Balbianello form the most celebrated lakeside sequence in Italy. The Alps are visible to the north in the mid-morning light, and Como‘s skyline begins to appear on the southern horizon well before the boat docks at 13:00.
Como offers over four hours of free time — from 13:00 to 17:20 — and the city rewards every minute. The Villa Geno pier delivers you immediately to the lakeside promenade: the Gothic-Renaissance cathedral is a short walk into the old town, and the Roman walls, the porticoed streets of the silk district, and the lakeside gardens fill the afternoon without any need for a programme.
This is the most complete way to experience both ends of Lake Como in a single day. The outward crossing reveals the western shore at its finest — Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbianello, the full width of the lake. Four hours in Como is enough time to understand a city that shaped European silk production for centuries. And the return crossing at golden hour, with Bellagio growing larger on the horizon, turns the journey home into the finest moment of the day.
